India and Australia on Wednesday signed a landmark security cooperation pact in Melbourne aimed at strengthening defense and maritime ties in the Indo-Pacific region.

The agreement covers regular high-level military dialogues, joint exercises, maritime safety, and submarine rescue operations. Both nations highlighted that the deal will play a crucial role in countering emerging regional challenges.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong jointly welcomed the pact, calling it a “significant step in building a stable Indo-Pacific.
